Sparkly Skully Napkin Rings

Hello Happy Haunters!!  It's almost time for Halloween, and today I have a very cool and simple tutorial perfect for the occasion.

If you are an ardent fan of table setting and/or tablescaping for each holiday, you know that coordinating colors and a theme are great elements for achieving a knock-your-socks-off setting.  For 2017's Halloween, I went with a theme inspired by Manic Panic's Shocking Blue.  I also wanted everything in my setting to coordinate perfectly.  I couldn't really find napkin holders that suited me or were the perfect shade of blue, and then Mr. Parsimonious (being the Mad-Scientist GENIUS he is, lol), suggested that we try to make own!  This was an easy and super fun project.  You will need:

Clear polyester casting resin
Glitter of your color choice
Catalyst for setting
A mold (mine was from The 99¢ Store)
A Ventilator to protect you from the fumes
A small disposable container (bowl or cup) for mixing
A wooden popsicle stick or tongue depressor
½-inch wide elastic of your color choice
Hot glue gun and glue sticks
Scissors

I originally purchased these dandy little skully molds for candy making, but they were also perfect for this project because A) they have lots of creepy-cool detail and B) they are very inexpensive, so molding casting resin in them wouldn't be a tremendous loss.

Begin by mixing the casting resin and catalyst together according to the package directions.  Make sure you are in a well-ventilated area or are wearing protective gear!!  Add glitter until you achieve the color you desire. Don't be afraid to play around and experiment until you get the color you want. Pour the mixture into molds (please excuse the Mad Scientist's Lab, lol).  Allow the resin to set according to the package directions.

Remove your completed skulls from the molds.  Pretty neat!

I knew I would be using black napkins for my setting, and this amount of glitter (after a bit of trial and error) was close enough to Manic Panic's Shocking Blue, and still showed up nicely against the black.

Cut the elastic into small strips large enough to hold a napkin.  I used my finger to measure a small loop, and used it as a template for the rest.

Bead a small amount of hot glue onto the back of your skull.  Glue the small rings of elastic onto the back.

Violà!!

Here is a picture I snapped with my IPad.  Although it doesn't represent the true color, this photo does showcase the detail of the holders.

These holders were a perfectly complimentary addition to my Manic Panic Shocking Blue tablescape.
